Supporting Skills Training in Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises in Manitoba

HR Facts

Study: Why don't small and medium-sized enterprises invest more in training?

(Excerpt from Social Research and Demonstration Corporation Newsletter - September, 2011) OTTAWA -- Investments in skills development can have a positive impact on various indicators of firms' performance. Why then don't small and medium-size enterprises ( SMEs ) invest more if the available evidence points to positive outcomes? The costs associated with training, including the opportunity cost of releasing staff from their regular work duties, can be quite high for smaller firms.

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS WORKSHOP!

Are you ready for an emergency at your workplace?

Employers who want to establish a safe and healthy working environment, need to be aware of the many hazards posed to workers. Employee injuries or fatalities, even in extreme situations such as infectious disease, fire, severe weather or acts of workplace violence, can be greatly minimized or prevented by being prepared. For any business, big or small, being prepared for an emergency can mean the difference between survival and failure.

The Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health Act W210 legislation requires businesses that have over 20 employees's to have a written Safety and Health Program. Your S&H program must identify internal and external resources, such as personnel and equipment that may be required to respond in an emergency situation. Biological and chemical hazards must also be assessed and considered when developing and implementing an emergency action plan (EAP).

On December 6th, 2011, SAFE Hospitality will be hosting a NEW Emergency Preparedness Workshop. This course is geared towards owners, managers/supervisors, safety committee members/representatives, fire marshals, emergency coordinators, or anyone who is directly involved in development or execution of an emergency plan. To register please call 694-SAFE or email at info@safehospitality.com.
