What If Your Customers Don't Complain?

Statistically only 4% of dissatisfied customers ever complain.  As business owners and managers you may think that because you haven't heard any complaints lately, things must be going well. Not true. A business may never hear from 96% of its customers and of those customers 91% just go away because they feel that complaining will not do them any good.

As business owners and managers, you should welcome complaints! Not saying that you want things to go wrong, but knowing that sometimes they will, you want your customers to tell you that there has been a problem so that you will have the opportunity to correct it.

It takes a well trained staff to know how to deal with difficult situations. If a customer complains, you don't want your staff to become defensive and escalate the situation. Properly handling a difficult situation ensures that the customer is listened to and the situation is resolved. Customers need to know that they are valued by your business. When they feel valued, they usually turn into long term customers.

Research suggests that there is a connection between customer retention and profitability. Long term customers tend to buy more, are predictable, usually cost less to service than new customers and also tend to be less price sensitive. It costs five to six times more to attract new customers than to keep old ones. Additionally, customer loyalty and the lifetime value of a customer can be worth up to 10 times as much as the price of a single purchase.

Handling Difficult Situations is one of MTEC's most popular sessions and we are offering it as one of our complimentary sessions on Thursday, September 29th.

Keep Your Business Profitable In 2011 - Invest Your Time In Training!

Theft Can Put a Business Out of Business

According to the Retail Council of Canada, retailers lose more than 8 million dollars per day from theft, which works out to being over 3 billion dollars annually.

Businesses typically experience losses of 0.5%-2% of gross sales to theft. This can be devastating to a business and potentially lead to the business closing.

Protect your assets! Attend the Retail Loss Prevention workshop on September 13th and find out how to stop thieves in their tracks. Be one of the first 15 to register for a complimentary seat.

To register or for more information, contact Pat Walker at pwalker@mtec.mb.ca or call 204-957-7437.

MTEC - Helping Employers Attract New Talent

MTEC strives to enhance the performance and ensure the sustainability of Manitoba's tourism, hospitality and retail industries. One of the areas in which we work towards being your "go-to" source is in helping with talent attraction. Two of the tools that MTEC offers are the Semi-Annual Job Fair and the MTEC Job Board. During August, employers found resounding success at each.

Semi-Annual Job Fair: On August 26, the Winnipeg Convention Centre hosted industry businesses for our 10th Semi-Annual Hospitality, Tourism and Retail Job Fair. This event saw the highest turnout in the history of MTEC Job Fairs with more than 510 job-seekers! Over 1,100 applications were received by employers! Given the responses from the employers in attendance, we feel we had a very successful day! Special thanks to the Winnipeg Convention Centre, the Manitoba Hotel Association and the Manitoba Restaurant and Foodservices Association for supporting this event! If you would like included in our next Semi-Annual Job Fair, please contact either Fiona McIntyre fmcintyre@mtec.mb.ca or Luanne Christensen lchristensen@mtec.mb.ca.

MTEC Job Board: How has the MTEC Job Board helped hospitality, tourism and retail businesses attract new talent? During August alone, the Job Board was visited 12,638 times. That's right - 12,638 visits to the MTEC Job Board! What were they viewing? They were viewing 60 jobs posted by 30 employers.

How do we promote the Job Board? Every second week, we email employment counsellors, Employment Manitoba and other similar organizations, reminding them to encourage their clients to review the open positions in their communities across the province. In fact, we sent over 130 of these emails during August alone. We also have bus-bench advertising in Winnipeg that mentions the MTEC Job Board. If you have any questions about the MTEC Job Board, which is free to employers and job seekers, please contact Luanne Christensen at lchristensen@mtec.mb.ca.

MTEC is working hard to help you attract the best employees. Do you have suggestions? Let us know how we can help you!
