New Hotels, Retailers and Restaurants Are Coming to Manitoba

How Can You Compete With All of This New Competition?

How will you compete with the arrival of all of the well known businesses that are coming to Manitoba? How will their arrival impact your business? These are questions that business owners must ask now and prepare for.

We know that budgets are tight and that spending on renovations and advertising may not be realistic.  So how can you make sure that you keep the customers that you already have?  You provide consistent quality products and consistent exceptional customer service.  Consistency is the key.

You can compete on service.  A culture of service comes from having well trained managers and employees. It comes from investing in your team.  Knowing how to treat your employees and customers reduces employee turn-over, reduces customer complaints and keep your customers coming back!  Your business will then benefit from all of the word-of- mouth advertising that you will receive from your customers and staff.

MTEC can help you position your business to remain strong in the face of new competition.  We offer workshops on selling, finance, customer service, merchandising, management and are hosting a conference that will cover these issues and more.

MTEC and SAFE Hospitality are pleased to present “Turning Training into Success” Keeping Your Business Profitable in Any Economy Conference and Exhibition on October, 19, 2011 at the Greenwood Inn and Suites in Winnipeg. Check out our latest door prizes!

Manitoba invests in new facility to train Aboriginal workers

Meant to address skilled labour shortages, increase competitiveness

The governments of Canada and Manitoba are investing $732,400 towards a new facility to train Aboriginal workers for skilled jobs in Manitoba's manufacturing and transportation industries.

Funding under the Canada-Manitoba Western Economic Partnership Agreement (WEPA) will be used to establish the Neeginan Industrial Manufacturing and Reprocessing Centre, part of the Centre for Aboriginal Human Resource Development (CAHRD) in Winnipeg.

"By investing in this centre, our government is promoting valuable training opportunities for Aboriginal youth, while ensuring that Manitoba's manufacturers have the skilled workers they need to compete in the global marketplace," said Vic Toews, minister of public safety, on behalf of Lynne Yelich, minister of state for Western Economic Diversification.

The investment will help the centre address skilled labour shortages by providing increased training opportunities in the industrial manufacturing and transportation sectors, said the Manitoba government. This will help increase both sectors' ability to remain competitive in global markets and support the business community.

This WEPA funding will assist with expanding an existing CAHRD facility and purchase training equipment that meets training standards for both the manufacturing and transportation industries.

It Costs You to Replace Employees, but It Pays to Train

What are you getting back from your investment in Training? How much are you spending on constantly replacing staff? The CTHRC has the tools to provide the answers

Having well trained, professional employees is important for any business, but determining the actual cost and value of training can be difficult. The Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council (CTHRC) is pleased to offer a Return on Training Investment tool (ROTI) that provides businesses with the means to identify the costs and benefits of training in real dollar values. Available for free online at Employers of Choice, ROTI calculates the cost of training, return on training investment, and the number of weeks required to recover the cost of training by comparing six performance measures before and after training: sales, upselling, staff turnover, customer satisfaction, employee competence, and cost savings.

Investing in training is proven to reduce employee turnover, the “expense without an invoice”. The free online Employee Turnover Cost Calculator allows businesses to measure this expense and compare it to the cost of retention strategies that reduce turnover and increase profits. Employers who use the Employee Turnover Cost Calculator and the Return on Training Investment tool together will develop a clear understanding of how effective training programs affect their bottom line, and how investing in their employees can keep their business competitive in the face of labour shortages and other human resource challenges.

For more information on ROTI, the Employee Turnover Cost Calculator, and other HR and business planning tools offered by the CTHRC, please visit Employers of Choice.

Manitoba Unveils New Policies that will Promote Training Opportunities, Workplace Safety on Publicly Funded Projects

Manitoba has moved forward on developing and implementing three new policies to expand the skills of the workforce and ensure compliance with safety requirements on publicly funded projects, Entrepreneurship, Training and Trade Minister Peter Bjornson announced today.

“The province’s commitment to expand skills and training, and invest in strategic capital projects is integral to Manitoba’s economy and will play a key role in contributing to strong economic growth into the future,” said Bjornson. ”These new policies will also create more career options and meaningful employment in Manitoba’s labour market.”

“Safety on the job is paramount and anything we can do to increase workplace safety is a step in the right direction,” said Labour and Immigration Minister Jennifer Howard.

The three new policies will be implemented province-wide for tendering on publicly funded capital works projects, with the initial phase beginning on July 1.

The new tendering requirements policy will help ensure the highest legislative and safety standards, as contractors will have to be Certificate of Recognition/Small Employer Certificate of Recognition (COR/SECOR) (or equivalent) certified and declare they will follow provincial laws through a bidders certification form including:

* the Workplace Health and Safety Act,
* the Employment Standards Code,
* the Construction Industry Wages Act, and
* the Apprenticeship and Certification Act.

An apprenticeship training policy will be implemented to help build the skills of the workforce. As an employer of skilled trades, the Province of Manitoba is leading by example through the consideration of the support for and participation in apprenticeship training in all project tendering for publicly funded capital contracts, Bjornson said.

A new Aboriginal-people training and development policy is also being introduced, to increase Aboriginal participation in trades and other construction related occupations, Howard said, adding contractors on selected government capital projects will have to certify that they will hire and train Aboriginal people.

“The industry supports the policies and is pleased to have been consulted by government in their development. The new policies will provide increased opportunities, improved skills and will ensure staff is adequately trained to ensure their safety,” said John Schubert, Manitoba Construction Sector Council.
