MTEC’s training is designed to increase the profitability and long term sustainability of businesses in the tourism industry in Manitoba. We deliver management and supervisory training; teaching employers how to be good HR managers. We also deliver training that will teach how to be good “business people” by increasing knowledge in operating an organization. Our business courses focus on training which directly impacts the bottom line, including marketing, selling, business insurance, using your financial statements as a management tool and business planning. All of these workshops are delivered by independent business owners, who possess current, relevant education and experience.
Many of us in the tourism industry have moved up through the organization with little or no formal training. In some cases this is like driving a small boat. You can become really good at it with experience, but if you get a bigger boat, experience may not be enough. You can’t be a captain of a ship without having formal training, experience and a licence. As a business owner or senior manager, you are the captain of the ship. When the business succeeds or fails-you get the credit or the blame. We know that many circumstances factor into business success and failure, but the person running the operation is the one who is ultimately responsible.
There is also new legislation in Manitoba on safety & health in the workplace. Many businesses are unaware of their responsibilities under this new legislation, resulting in severe penalties costing in the tens of thousands of dollars. It is imperative that we know our responsibilities and use the best safety practices available to help us sustain a safe, healthy and respectful workplace. MTEC’s SAFE Hospitality has responded to this mandate by integrating specialized safety workshops which will help our industry stay ahead of current legislation and increase customer and employee satisfaction, safety, retention and reduce possible liability.

Ladies and gentleman, start your cash registers. Thanks to the return of the Winnipeg Jets, the soon-to-be-opened terminal building at the Richardson International Airport and the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, which is expected to be completed next year, Winnipeg is about to enter a brave new world of tourism. According to a report from the Conference Board of Canada, spending on tourism-related goods and services in Winnipeg will increase 4.2 per cent this year and grow at an average rate of 5.6 per cent between 2012 and 2015. Greg Hermus, Ottawa-based associate director of the Conference Board, said the museum will undoubtedly be Winnipeg's biggest draw once it opens with between 200,000 and 250,000 people expected to visit annually. Many of those people will already be coming to Winnipeg for other reasons but the museum itself could account for up to 15 per cent of their visits. "A couple of percentage points on the overall tourism base is significant," he said.
HR: Adapt your job search for the summer

Here we are in the middle of June already – where does the time go? I’ve been getting calls from clients since the beginning of May asking me questions about the temperature of the job search market in the summer months. Do companies hire in the summer? Should they keep searching in the summer or wait until the fall? What should they be doing in the summer months? Here are my opinions and tips:
1. Companies hire all year round. True, the job market may not be in flux as it typically is in September and January, but hiring does not grind to a halt. Many companies are searching and scoping out talent over the summer months. My business partner in crime, an executive recruiter, has an arm’s length of active searches on the go right now — so many that he has added to his staff to help manage the workload. Any given search can take a minimum of 6-12 weeks to complete – that would take the final offer stage to September, but the sourcing and interviewing take place in the summer months. Even internal recruiters keep searching over the summer months, because business never goes on vacation.
2. Networking is not an event. It is on-going and dynamic. While many people take time off, there is always someone working somewhere. Now is the time to adapt your networking strategy. Change gears and change up your tactics. Build relationships with people over summer time activities like a round of golf, a patio lunch, bike ride, or cultural event. Connect with parents at your childrens’ soccer game or swimming lesson. Just because people aren’t in business suits doesn’t mean they’re not in business. These more relaxed environments can help develop your relationship because they let you get to know each other on new dimensions. People want to do business with people they know, like, and trust. Summer is a great time to re-connect with people you’ve lost touch with and an opportunity for you to get the jump on your competition because you made the time to reach out with great genuineness. In these two weeks of June alone, I’ve sent three birthday cards, invited contacts to an open air documentary film festival at a local brewery, asked for recommendations for summer cottage rentals, forwarded postings that might be interesting to my network’s network, booked four mid-week late patio lunches with groups of people who don’t know each other, but I know will have a lot in common (makes me the connector and the ‘go-to’ person), and scheduled a dog walk in the park with a potential client whom I know has a dog and works from home for the month of July.
Absolutely keep searching over the summer. The groundwork you lay now will pay off for you in the weeks and months to come.

Free Online Assessment Identifies Existing Transferable Skills
Recognizing areas of strength helps individuals make education, training, and career decisions
Developed by the Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council (CTHRC), the free self-assessment tool Finding and Applying your Skills in Tourism (FAST) is available now from Discover Tourism. Especially useful for secondary and postsecondary students and newcomers to Canada, FAST allows users to identify and understand the transferable skills that they already have. The tool is designed to identify tourism occupations that correspond to an individual’s existing skill set, but findings from FAST can be easily applied to any industry.
FAST consists of seven checklists covering a wide range of transferable skills in areas such as Communications, Professionalism, Sales and Marketing, and Human Resources. The checklists can be completed individually or as a set, and are easily incorporated into high school or postsecondary curriculum. The flexibility of this online tool allows it to be completed in a classroom setting, or on an individual’s own time from any computer.
Individuals are prompted to give an example of how they have used each skill in the checklist. When a checklist is complete, the user will receive a summary report that helps them understand which skills they already possess, how these skills are applicable in the workplace, and how they might present these skills to potential employers in résumés and job interviews.

Safety Days are a great way to encourage staff members to be more safety conscious as well as a great way to improve workplace morale.
